For more than 40 years, Arc Downriver, a nonprofit organization, has provided a forum for parents to advocate for programs and services to help people with mental retardation and other developmental disabilities to achieve their maximum potential. The emphasis is on social and recreational activities as well as advocacy. It is one of five Arc organizations in Wayne County, the only county in the country with more than one Arc agency. In 1997, the organization received a grant to offer a day program for the severely disabled.

Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital is a 379-bed facility that has served Downriver since 1926. Among the services the hospital offers are general medicine, inpatient and ambulatory surgery, cardiac diagnostics/treatment and rehabilitation, inpatient and outpatient physical rehabilitation care and inpatient adult behavioral services. The 25-bed obstetrics unit celebrates 1,600 births each year in a family centered care environment. Wyandotte’s emergency department is one of the busiest in southeastern Michigan, serving 72,000 patients annually. Community health education and outreach programs are an integral part of the hospital’s mission. A team of registered nurses conducts blood pressure and cholesterol screenings at 35 sites each month. The hospital also sponsors classes and support groups for specific interests from childbirth preparation to diabetes management to nutrition counseling to senior health issues. The medical staff is comprised of more than 600 physicians representing primary and specialty care.

Oakwood Healthcare System serves a 500-square-mile area and operates four acute care hospitals, several health centers and a vast number of specialty services. The 248-bed Oakwood Heritage Hospital has been serving the area since 1977. Heritage offers a full range of services, and was among the first in the country to receive the Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval for total joint replacement. Some of the specialty services offered at Heritage include 24-hour emergency care; orthopedic surgery, including the latest in minimally invasive hip and knee replacement technology; physical medicine and rehabilitation; hyperbaric oxygen therapy and wound care; pain management center; behavioral health program; outpatient diagnostic testing and laboratory services, including full service MRI, CT, X-ray, mammography, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, cardiovascular workup and laboratory studies; and a long-term acute care unit operated by Select Specialty Hospital.

Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center has 620 beds and is a full-service teaching hospital that has served southeast Michigan for more than 50 years. OHMC offers emergency medicine, general medicine and surgery, outpatient surgery, diagnostic imaging, labor and delivery/neonatal intensive care, pediatrics, intensive care and coronary units. This center also is the hub for Oakwood’s centers in heart and vascular, orthopedics/neurology, women’s health and cancer. The facility is accredited by the Joint Commission and received the Gold Seal of Approval in 2007 for its total joint replacement program. OHMC was recognized as a “Top 100” cardiology hospital for the eighth time in nine years.

Southshore has offered a full range of health care services since 1961. Services include a 24-hour emergency care unit; general medicine and surgery; intensive care; cardiac rehabilitation; obstetrics and a family birthing center; physical medicine; outpatient surgery; radiology including digital breast mammography, stereotactic biopsy and bone densitometry; CT scans; a cardiac catheterization lab; an infusion center and magnetic resonance imaging. Additionally, the final phases of the “Southshore Promise,” a $60 million investment in the hospital campus, will be completed in 2008. Some of the enhancements include a new emergency department, all private rooms and an auditorium for medical education programs.
